Everybody is invited to the opening event of Tampere’s bid for the title of European Capital of Culture on 30 March at Hiedanranta

Tampere is looking to become the European Capital of Culture in 2026, and the application process will be launched with a public event in the industrial Hiedanranta venue on Saturday 30 March 2019. The event starts at 12:00 p.m. and goes until 7:30 p.m.

The Capital of Culture campaign, which is a joint effort of Tampere and 14 municipalities in the Pirkanmaa region, welcomes all inhabitants of the region to an opening event in Kuivaamo and the skateboarding hall at Hiedanranta. Admission is free, and the locations will be filled with exciting experiences and with activities that encourage participation. Award-winning kantele player Ida Elina will give her renditions of pop classics, the wind octet of the Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra will go wild with Mozart’s opera music and fire art group Flamma will illuminate the colourful setting at Hiedanranta. Everybody can test their skills in the skateboarding hall with the guidance of Kaarikoirat and leave their mark in a collective work of street art. Families with children will be entertained by popular musical duo Höpinätötterö. The day will end with the silent film Lost World from 1925 and enchanting musical accompaniment played by the six-person ensemble Maajo.

Mayor Lauri Lyly will open Tampere’s Capital of Culture bidding process together with Creative Director Juha Hemánus.

“Every participant can have an influence on what kind of Capital of Culture region Tampere and Pirkanmaa can become together. Our goal is to crystallise the essence of Tampere identity so that it captures hearts internationally. To achieve that we need participation from the citizens, and therefore we invite everybody to this opening event to share experiences, ideas and discussion," says Juha Hemánus.

Event partner Tampere Regional Transport will provide an additional bus service from Keskustori to Kuivaamo at Hiedanranta from 11:30 a.m. onwards. Street kitchen Leidi and other food vendors will serve people all day. The detailed programme is constantly being updated at the event’s Facebook page. Welcome to the event to enjoy the unique atmosphere and to influence the Capital of Culture campaign on your own, with a friend or as a group.

The next time a Finnish city could be chosen as the Capital of Culture is 2026.
