Moomin Animations – Thrills and Cuddles exhibition is now open
Are you one of the many fans who grew up watching Moomin animations on TV? A large number of adaptations of the widely loved Moomin stories by Tove Jansson (1914–2001) have been produced for television over the past 60 years.
Each adaptation made over the past six decades is a distinctive product of its time, adding its own particular nuances to Jansson’s original books and comic strips. A selection of Jansson’s original illustrations from the Moomin Museum’s collections will be presented alongside the animations as the “master samples” to which all the later adaptations owe their existence.
Thrills and Cuddles
The first Moomin TV adaptation ever made was a German puppet animation dating from 1959. The first Japanese version followed a decade later, followed by a Polish production in the late 1970s. The most famous TV adaptation to date is Moomin from 1990, which aired in over 120 countries. The latest is Moominvalley, a new series produced by Finland’s Gutsy Animations. The series is currently in international distribution and is being aired by the Finnish Broadcasting Company as of spring 2019.
The thing that many of us remember about the Moomin TV series is the mounting sense of suspense and adventure combined with the snug warmth of the Moomin world and the pleasure of sharing cosy moments with family and friends. At the Moomin Museum you can relive those memories by viewing episodes of all animations from the past 60 years. The exhibition also takes a look at how they were produced, including script excerpts, exquisite hand-drawn storyboards, character sketches, digital mock-ups, clay figures and cardboard models. Alongside iconic scenes from the animations, the Moomin Museum will also present original illustrations from its collections.
