Boosting low carbon mobility
A new project to promote smart and sustainable mobility has begun in Tampere: 6Cities Low Carbon Mobility in Traffic Hubs. The project seeks new solutions for example to public transport-based travel chains and smart parking, in accordance with the national transport sector growth program of Finland. The work is carried out in close cooperation with companies.
In Tampere, one of the city’s most important and challenging hubs for mobility, hospital and educational area Kauppi, has been selected as a development area. The goal is that those who come to the area would choose low-carbon mobility instead of using their own car.
"This requires that these services are truly functional and more attractive than private cars," says Project Manager Jukka Reunavuori from Tampere Region Economic Development Agency, Business Tampere.
The services to be developed have been selected on the basis of the Kauppi Mobility Survey of 2018. The survey was attended by more than a thousand visitors working and studying in the area. Companies now have the opportunity to develop these new services and business models, which can later be commercialized into a modern transport system. The aim is that the best tested services remain in Tampere and will also be scaled nationally and internationally to other smart cities. The benefits and lessons learned are shared openly, and thus the results of the project will serve a wide range of actors.
The development work supports strongly the City of Tampere’s goal of being carbon-neutral by 2030. Work will begin in the fall of 2019 with making a cycling service network plan, a bicycle parking plan and a ridesharing pilot. Related competitive biddings will be carried out during September and October.
The 6Cities Low Carbon Mobility in Traffic Hubs project started in August and will continue until the end of October 2021. Business Tampere, the City of Oulu, Turku University of Applied Sciences, the City of Turku and the City of Espoo are involved in the implementation. The total budget for the project is approximately EUR 2 million, of which EUR 475 000 is for Tampere.
