Tampere Festival of Light illuminates the city for 156 days
Tampere Festival of Light illuminates the streets of the Tampere city centre once again during the darkest season. This year, the Festival of Light was opened earlier than usual, on 5 October, to celebrate the City of Tampere’s 240th anniversary. The Festival of Light continues until 8 March 2020. Tampere Festival of Light is celebrated for the 54th time this year.
The Festival of Light features familiar illuminations that can be admired in familiar locations on the main streets of the city centre. This year, light fixtures and figures can be found in surprising locations throughout the city. The light figures of the Tampere Festival of Light will be lit at dusk and turned off on weekdays at 11 pm and on weekends at 5 am.
The Light Gallery exhibition projects light art on building facades. The Hämeenkatu main street will be illuminated with fairy lights and decorative lighting. At the end of October, new light art will be added to the city’s main street as well. Aleksis Kiven katu street will be lit with familiar lamp post illuminations, Kauppakatu street gets a light crown, and the surroundings of the Laikunlava stage will be illuminated with new lights. Kuninkaankatu street will be lit with familiar illuminations, and the street will be decorated with light spheres all the way to Stable Yards. In addition, some of the trees surrounding Museum Milavida will be decorated with light spheres. Konsulinsaari island will be illuminated with the familiar horse light figures. This year, the Hämeenpuisto park will also be illuminated with the help of local entrepreneurs.
Tuomiokirkonkatu street will get traditional illuminations. In addition, the street will get a spectacular, interactively illuminated ice lantern. Yliopistonkatu street will be decorated with light spheres and Tullikamari square will be illuminated with light figures. The Walk of Fame on Åkerlundinkatu street, inaugurated on 4 October at 6pm, stands out in the cityscape due to special lighting that changes and highlights the stars on the street. The stars are illuminated with spotlights and the significance of the entire street is highlighted with coloured lights. The model of the Tampere Deck in front of the Visit Center on Åkerlundinkatu street will be illuminated with different kinds of light installations. At the Opening of Tampere Christmas, Hatanpään valtatie road and Tammelantori marketplace will be illuminated with familiar light figures. The Festival of Light reaches all the way to Hiedanranta where the workshop surroundings will be illuminated with light figures.
