Tampereen Energia and Nordic Ren-Gas have signed a significant collaboration agreement to capture and repurpose CO₂ emissions and waste heat in an environmentally sustainable way. The project has received €46 million in investment support from Finland’s Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment and focuses on building an e-methane production facility in Tarastenjärvi, Tampere.
The facility will utilize captured CO₂ from Tammervoima’s waste-to-energy plant, transforming emissions into renewable e-methane. Additionally, the waste heat generated during production will be directed into Tampereen Energia’s district heating network, increasing the share of renewable energy in the city's heating system. This innovative approach significantly reduces fossil fuel dependency and CO₂ emissions, supporting Finland’s green transition.
Construction is set to begin in 2025, with commercial operations expected to start in 2027. Once operational, the plant will produce approximately 170 GWh of renewable methane and 180 GWh of CO₂-free district heating annually.
This project is a prime example of sector integration, demonstrating how collaboration between energy and industry can accelerate the transition to sustainable energy solutions both locally and internationally.
