Finnish energy technology company Enico has delivered a large-scale energy storage system to a client in Latvia - one of the most significant deals in the company’s history. The agreement took shape following a business delegation trip to Latvia, organized by Business Tampere.

The project involves a 3 MW / 6 MWh energy storage system integrated with a solar power plant. In addition to optimizing renewable energy production, the system also acts as a frequency reserve for Latvia’s national grid operator, supporting regional energy stability.

“This deal wouldn’t have happened without the groundwork laid during our visit to Latvia,” says Marko Lähteenmäki, CEO of Enico. “Business Tampere played a crucial role in creating the right contacts and context for this collaboration.”

The same delegation included multiple growth-oriented companies from the Tampere Region. Tailored business meetings - co-organized with the Latvian Embassy - resulted in successful client and subcontractor relationships, including this flagship deal for Enico.

Baltic Energy Shift Creates New Opportunities

Latvia, along with Estonia and Lithuania, is rapidly modernizing its energy infrastructure. The countries disconnected from the Russian power grid in early 2025, accelerating the need for smart energy storage and frequency regulation solutions.

Enico’s delivery to Valmiera, Latvia, demonstrates how Finnish technology and Baltic demand are aligning - underscoring the region’s openness to strategic cooperation across sectors.

A Wider Landscape of Baltic Collaboration

While this project focuses on energy, it highlights the strength of regional connections between Tampere and the Baltics - connections that are also key to air transport development. With airBaltic operating a base at Tampere Airport, growing business and industrial ties further reinforce the logic of strong air links and shared market interests.

Delegations as Door-Openers

Business Tampere regularly coordinates targeted export trips to markets such as the Baltics and Sweden. The Latvian delegation was led by Heini Wallander (Head of Industry) and Jouni Myllymäki (Senior Business Advisor), both of whom emphasize the importance of in-person meetings for turning contacts into contracts.

“This is exactly the kind of impact we aim for - creating conditions for business to happen,” says Wallander. “We’re happy to see results like this for companies like Enico.”
