About Sarawak

Sarawak, known as the Land of the Hornbills, is the largest of the Malaysian states and is situated on the island of Borneo. Home to the world’s oldest tropical rainforest it offers an abundance of wildlife, which includes rare and endangered species such as the orang-utan and the hornbill.

Kuching is only a short flight away from Malaysia's capital city of Kuala Lumpur and forms the central hub and gateway to Sarawak. This historic capital city contains a population of around 600,000 people and dates back hundreds of years when traders from China and the West would travel there to trade the exotic treasures of the rainforest. This presents you with the opportunity to trek the heritage walk along the Main Bazaar right beside the Sarawak River and trace the footsteps of explorers of old.

Right by the Sarawak River on the waterfront is Kuching's oldest row of shop houses, handicrafts, wood carvings, local spices and unique indigenous art can be found here. What's more, about 35 minutes from away from the city, you can experience uncaged, semi-wild orang-utans up close and personal.
