The Akmola Camp for the Wives of the Enemies of Motherland was one of the largest camps of the Soviet Union and one of three 'islands' noted in Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn's The Gulag Archipelago. The camp was opened in early 1938 when the first wave of the prisoners arrived.

Legend has it that when God created the world, he gave people beautiful green forests, wide rivers, high mountains and endless blue lakes, but the Kazakhs received only the steppes. Offended, they began to ask the creator to give them more, so God took out the remains of the picturesque cliffs, clear blue water lakes, generous emerald meadows covered with flowers and merry brooks, and that’s how the stunning Burabay region of Kazakhstan was created.
