Pedro Pierluisi
Governor, Puerto Rico
Pedro Pierluisi was elected as Puerto Rico’s Governor on November 3rd, 2020. He is an attorney from San Juan with 35 years of experience in both the public and private sectors, has extensive litigation and negotiation experience, as well as an arbitrator and mediator.
He began his professional career in Washington D.C. as an assistant to Puerto Rico’s delegate in Congress Baltasar Corrada del Río, and then worked for six years as a trial attorney in prominent law firms. He returned to practice law in Puerto Rico in 1990 and served as Puerto Rico's Attorney General from 1993 to 1996. As chief legal officer on the Island, he led the fight against crime, obtaining Puerto Rico's designation as a High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area. Commissioned by the White House, he lobbied Congress for the passage of the 1994 Crime bill, before returning to private practice as a partner at a prestigious law firm for 10 years.
He was elected as a Member of Congress for Puerto Rico and served as a delegate in the House of Representatives for eight years. During his tenure he compiled an impressive record of achievements in multiple areas, including having secured billions of dollars in federal funds, ensuring that Puerto Rico and other U.S. territories were treated fairly in the federal health reform. Similarly, Pierluisi worked to advance multiple initiatives from federal agencies to benefit the people of Puerto Rico in the areas of public safety, economic development, education, health and environmental protection.
Pierluisi has always advocated for equality for American citizens residing in Puerto Rico, including a relentless fight for fair treatment under all federal programs and under all U.S. law that is only possible with statehood.
As Governor, he has prioritized the reconstruction process after Hurricane María and 2020 earthquakes, working with FEMA and HUD to expedite disaster funding allocated to Puerto Rico, and leveraging pandemic relief funds to spur economic development. He has focused on improving education and open schools as the COVID pandemic slowed, and his administration has been extremely successful in vaccination efforts, which now place Puerto Rico as the third U.S. jurisdiction with more people fully vaccinated. He continues to lead the fight against crime and gender violence, signed an increase in the minimum salary into law, and is supporting the full transformation of the Puerto Rico’s energy system to increase renewables and repair its aging and weak electrical grid.
Pierluisi, who is the father of four adult children and the grandfather of five, earned his Bachelor’s degree in 1981 from Tulane University in New Orleans and his Juris Doctor in 1984 from George Washington University.
